Ari Edelman Publishes Article in NYLJ on How Reddit Must Navigate a Slippery Legal Landscape to Succeed with IPO and Investment in AI

Article

Olshan corporate partner Ari Edelman authored an article in New York Law Journal (subscription required) entitled “Reddit Must Navigate a Slippery Legal Landscape to Succeed with IPO and Investment in AI.” In the article, Ari details how Reddit’s recent IPO could kickstart a formerly sluggish IPO market. He discusses the regulatory and cybersecurity policy hurdles that Reddit needed to overcome as part of the IPO process. He also highlights the additional challenges the company faces in expanding into the artificial intelligence (AI) sector. “The terms of open source licenses have not yet been interpreted by courts,” Ari writes. “This poses a legal risk to Reddit, whose developing AI business depends on Reddit’s ability to enforce open source licensing agreements with customers. Reddit can also expect increased scrutiny from regulators, relating to AI or otherwise, especially now that the company is public.” Ari also discusses how future changes to privacy laws and to the Communications Decency Act could impact Reddit’s content moderation policies. “Reddit is no stranger to adversity and has confronted a challenging legal and regulatory environment for years,” he writes. “Their success as a public company may hinge on how well they navigate a rapidly evolving legal landscape.”
